Deathly Hallows: Missing Moments

It's now been 12 weeks since the release of the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, so by now we're sure that everyone has had a chance to read, re-read and inwardly digest.  So, clearly it's time for us to get on with our first contest of the post-DH world, and we're sure that you've all been wondering what said contest was going to be.  We had a few ideas for a contest - a Next Generation contest, another table of random motivations taken from the book, and many more that you'll probably be seeing around here over the coming months - but predictably we ended up right back at the very first idea we had - a 'missing moments' contest.

While reading Deathly Hallows - or any book, for that matter - we're sure everyone occasionally started imagining some of the events that happen 'off the page', unseen by the reader.  For example, while reading Order of the Phoenix, you might find yourself wondering what Mrs Weasley's reaction to the Flight of the Weasleys would have been, or some other tiny event that just slips into your head, and nestles among the events you've just read.  These 'missing moments' are often the basis of some of the best fanwork we've read, so now we want to see just what additions to the plot your own imaginations can come up with, and get them out there for all to see.

We've also relaxed our rules slightly this time around - from now on, we're opening our contests to all makers of Slytherin-centric fanwork, not just those who concentrate on Tom Riddle.  (Now that the Dark Lord is dead, it seemed like a good time to open things up to the wider Slytherin House...)  Apart from that, all the normal TBC Contest rules apply, and all entries should be uploaded to the TBC Fanwork Archive by 11.59pm [Board Time/Central US] on the 28th of October.  (Click here to register if you haven't already!)  Judging, as ever, will take place through an open poll on the forums, so any lurkers may also want to get themselves signed up there, too.

CONTEST GUIDELINES

Your story or picture must feature a member of Slytherin House as a main character, and must link directly into the events depicted in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  AU submissions are allowed, as long as they are also connected with DH's events - this is to allow fics/art that branch off from DH's events, but don't quite fit with whatever comes next.  ('The road not taken', if you prefer.)  As ever, anyone who wants to produce multi-chaptered fics or artwork series can do so, but please be aware that an incomplete series might lose out when it comes to reviews/votes.

As usual, we've created some challenges to help you out, if you're looking for some inspiration to get you going...  If you're still struggling for ideas after reading these, then come make a request on our Contest Thread, we're sure someone will oblige you.

Contest Challenges:

1. Give us a re-telling of the final Battle of Hogwarts, written from the perspective of one Tom Marvolo Riddle.
2. At the Battle of Hogwarts, the whole of Slytherin House refuses to take part in Hogwarts' defence - show us that at least some of the House's members regretted that decision.
3. Depict another prominent Slytherin visiting the grave of Lord Voldemort, to pay their respects... or to swear vengeance?
4. Using your choice of fic or art, show us what happened to Fenrir Greyback after the end of the fight at Hogwarts. (His fate was unknown by the end of the book.)
5. Write a fic where Scorpius Malfoy finds the Resurrection Stone - last seen in the Forbidden Forest - and uses it to restore Tom Riddle to life.
6. Show us what Voldemort would have seen, when he reached the world-beyond-life. (Harry saw it as Platform 9 3/4, but this need not be Voldemort's experience.)
7. How, in the name of all that's gormless, did a dunderhead like Crabbe learn a spell as powerful as Fiendfyre?  Explain, in words or images.
8. What would events in the Slytherin-dominated staff room of Hogwarts be like during Snape's term as Headmaster?  Make it dark, make it funny - make it different.
9. Show the Sorting of the New Generation, as depicted in the epilogue - including at least one shock sorting into Slytherin, and the ensuing reaction.
10. Write a fic/draw a picture portraying the demise of Rufus Scrimegour at the hands of Lord Voldemort. (Note: This may mean an A18-rated piece of work!)
