'And now, the end is near...'

...and so we face the final curtain.  Or the final book, at any rate - that's right, after 10 years, 7 books, 5 films, and more money than you could normally obtain by legal means, the Harry Potter saga is finally coming to an end.  Specifically, it's coming to an end this summer, when the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is unleashed upon an unsuspecting world.  But let's face it - you knew all that already.  You'll probably also know that this ending of the series bodes fairly ill for our favourite Dark Lord - these are, after all, children's books, and he is the bad guy.  The end of the series rarely ends well for those.

So, since it looks like we're going to see Lord Voldemort cast into an unwanted and much-feared oblivion, we thought we might as well take matters into our own hands, and do it our own way.  If Voldemort must die, then it will be at our hands first, and please spare us the innuendo, just this once.  Your challenge for this contest is to write or draw the demise of Lord Voldemort.  You can do it in any way you please - it can be funny, emotional, sympathetic, dramatic, tragic, anything you like.  You can have him blasting his foes right until the end, or you can have him repenting before suffering a Ministry-enforced snog with a Dementor.  It's all down to you.

All our usual rules apply - you have to upload your work on the TBC Fanwork Archive, in the correct category ('Contest Entries > FanArt' or 'Contest Entries > FanFic'), and with 'Voldemort's Demise Contest' in the description/author's notes.  Voting will be held on the TBC forums, as usual - the poll on the front page is too open to abuse for something like this.  The deadline for entries to be uploaded to the appropriate archive category is just over 5 weeks away - Sunday 1st April, at 11.59pm.  Judging will probably start on the Monday after, but you know what we're like. ;)

CONTEST GUIDELINES

Your story or picture must portray the final demise of Tom Riddle/Voldemort, in any way you see fit.  Songfics, multi-chaptered fics, artwork series and AU submissions are all acceptable, but it would be best if any series was complete by the contest deadline.  (Voters and reviewers would probably prefer it too!)  Our roster of ten challenges also make a welcome return for this most auspicious of contests, to give you a little inspiration, and if none of these ideas lights your fire then you should be able to find ample assistance at the contest's forum thread, or by scouting around the Challenges feature of the Fanwork Archive.

Challenges:

1. Either write a huge, all-characters-involved final battle for us, or draw a picture of one.
2. At the end, your life flashes before your eyes, so they say.  How would Voldemort's view be?
3. Holmes had to die to end Moriarty's villainous career - what if Harry has to die to end Voldemort's?
4. Show Voldemort reverting - physically, mentally, or both - into Tom Riddle at his end.
5. There's only one way to end a rivalry - a full, no-quarter-asked Wizard's Duel. Give us one.
6. Voldemort has been defeated, and captured alive. He has been sentenced to the Dementor's Kiss, and is in a prison cell awaiting his fate. What is he thinking/doing?
7. If Voldemort is going down, then he's taking everybody with him. Show us a final battle that ends with no survivors whatsoever.
8. Everyone expects Harry to be the one to kill Voldemort - let someone else get the glory!
9. After his death, what kind of afterlife is Voldemort going to wake up to?
10. There are a lot of characters in the HP universe that might like Voldemort's end to be painful, and at their hands. Give one of them their wish. (A18 challenge)
