Yuletide FanWork Contest 2005

We're making a list. We're checking it twice. And it's got nothing to do with being naughty or nice. tongue.gif (Mainly, because we tend to get confused as to the difference.) That's right, that yuletide season is upon us once again, bringing with it that Coke advert, about 12 squillion toy adverts, trees as disposable furniture, several forests' worth of cards, mince pies, sherry, presents, turkey, and the ubiquitous partridge in a pear tree. (Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.) We're sure you've all got wonderful plans for the holiday period, and that you'll be coming to the forums to tell us about them, but we were curious as to what you think our favourite HP characters get up to over this particular time of year.  So, in true Cafe fashion, we're holding a contest to get some fanwork answering just that question.

The theme of the contest, if you hadn't guessed, is to create a yuletide-based piece of fanwork - art or fiction - showing Tom, along with the other Death Eaters, the GTDEs, other Slytherins, or whatever.  Beyond that, you're pretty much free to do whatever you wish - there are no limits.  You can set your piece at Christmas, New Year, or any other festival being held at that time of year.  (In fact, some Hogmanay at Hogwarts fics must surely be done!)  As usual, we've also set some voluntary challenges for anyone who needs inspiration, along with a couple of challenges tailored for those who want to represent a funnier or darker side of the fandom. Any plot bunnies that happen to be going spare, half-baked ideas, questions, comments, appeals for help or general discussion can also be taken to the Contest Thread.

This time, the contest is open to anyone who is registered on the new TBC FanWork Archive, so pop on over and register if you haven't done so already. Membership is necessary, as you will need to be able to post your work there in order to take part! Judging will take place through an open poll on the forums, so we recommend you also register on our forums, so that you can have your say in who the eventual winner will be. To enter, you must upload your piece of fanwork to the TBC FanWork Archive, with the words 'Yuletide Contest 2005' or similar written into the fanwork description. They must also be uploaded to the system before midnight (Board Time/Central US) on Friday 23rd December. Any entries received after this time will not be eligible for voting. We look forward to seeing your entries, good luck to everybody, and and pass the basilisk-egg-nog!

CONTEST GUIDELINES

Your story or picture must contain Tom Riddle/Voldemort as a main character, and must be set around the yuletide season - which is to say the period around December which includes holidays for many different cultures, including Christmas, New Year, Hanukkah, Hogmanay, and many more. You are free to show this however you wish, but it must be an integral part of your story or picture - time-ambiguous stories are always welcome in the archives, but aren't suitable for this particular contest.  Multi-chaptered fics and Artwork series are acceptable, but it would be best if the series was complete by the contest deadline.  (Voters and reviewers would probably prefer it too!)  Your work can be set in any era, and feature any other characters you wish.  AU submissions are allowed, although please follow canon wherever possible.

We have also created the following challenges, to help anyone who is in need of inspiration.  More challenges may be available at the Contest Thread, as our ever-helpful members offer their plot bunnies for your perusal.

Challenges:

1. Represent the wizarding version of Hogmanay, set either at Hogwarts or in Hogsmeade.
2. Make a piece of fanwork depicting Christmas at Tom's orphanage.
3. Create something showing Tom's first Christmas at Hogwarts.
4. Write a story based around Voldemort's most recent Christmas, or draw a picture of it.
5. In your entry, show Voldemort showing an uncharacteristic art of kindness at Christmas.
6. Find some way to demonstrate how Tom/Voldemort would feel at New Year. (Any New Year)
7. Write a story/Draw a picture featuring some Death Eaters on a Carol Singing trip.
8. Write a story/Draw a picture involving mistletoe and any Slytherin.
9. Draw a picture of the Death Eaters' Christmas dinner, or write a story based around it.
10. Create some fanwork for Voldemort's somewhat darker yuletide celebrations. (This challenge may involve an highly-rated piece of work.)
