Frequently Asked Questions

There's a lot of competition to get into the TBC Crew's Inbox.  Every day, we're bombarded with dozens of comments and queries, and it can be hard to keep up.  (True, most of the queries are along the lines of 'Dnt U wnt 2 nlrg yr p3n15?', but there's still a lot of them to wade through.)  But occasionally, we do get a question that we actually want to answer, and we sometimes don't get there quick enough.  So, we've listed a few of the more regular questions and answers here, to give people a place to check before they dive in among all that spam...  ;)

Q: Why a Tom Riddle fansite?  Is it just 'Bad Boy Syndrome'?
A: Well, we can't deny that's how we got started.  But we're not all about that, and we do enjoy examining his character and background in detail - finding out why someone would make the choices he has made is bound to make for an interesting discussion.  Besides, ask any actor and they'll tell you - the villain is often far more interesting and challenging than the hero.

Q: How do I join/register?
A: There's two different member areas - the forums and the fanwork archive.  Each has a separate membership system, so you'll have to sign up for them each individually if you want to use them both.  Whichever one you want to join, go to the appropriate 'Log In' page, and you'll find the 'Register' link there.

Q: Do I have to register?
A: You don't have to register to view the site's content - like the JKR.com Guide, forums, or other site pages - or the fanwork in the archive. However, you will have to register in order to post in the forums, or to add fanwork to the archive.

Q: I'm under 13 - why can't I join?
A: Under the law of the United States - where this site, and most of the Admin team is based - it is illegal to collect personal information from children under the age of 13 without parental consent.  (This is known as the Children's Online Privacy & Protection Act, or COPPA.)  In order to comply with this act - and in common with many other fansites - we have decided not to allow children under 13 to register.

Q: What is the TBC Crew?
A: The TBC Crew is the Admin team for the site - the founders, and a couple of others that joined the team later.  At the moment - and for the foreseeable future - there are 6 members of the Crew, and you can find out who they are on the Founders page.

Q: How do I get my name listed on the 'GTDEs' page?
A: There's a 'GTDE Form' thread on the forums - you have to fill this in, and email the results to the Crew.

Q: How come I haven't heard of some of the GTDEs in the 'Which GTDE Are You?' Quiz?
A: Because the quiz is very old, that's why - it was created in the first few months of TBC's existence, at which point some of the current TBC Crew weren't even members yet.  A few of the members mentioned in the Quiz didn't return after the forum crash of 2003, so even their memberships have been lost.

Q: How do I <Insert Problem Here> on jkrowling.com?
A: We've created a JKR.com Site Guide to help anyone that's still hunting for the many secrets on jkrowling.com, and the forums also have a detailed thread where you can ask for help. 

Q: What does <Insert Word Here> mean?
A: Chances are you've stumbled across one of our little in-jokes - you can look up the meaning of just about all of them by using the Encyclopedia Basilika.

Q: Can I copy stuff from your site and add it to mine?
A: No.

Q: What about the fanwork in your archive?
A: We can't give you permission to put someone's fanwork on your site - only the author/artist has the right to do that, so you'll have to ask their permission, not ours.

Q: Will you link to my HP site?
A: We don't see why not, as long as you link back to us too.  Drop us an email, and we should be able to sort something out.
