The Basilisk Cafe

Encyclopedia Basilika - N-Z

Olivergirl: The one-time nemesis of every GTDE, Olivergirls are those who believe Oliver Wood, broomstick-polisher extraordinaire, was preferable to Tom Riddle. Peace was established when everyone agreed to drool freely over whichever man they chose, and now Olivergirls are as welcome in the Café as GTDEs.

Operation: Coulson Kisses: Ever since the GTDEs were formed from a small group of adoring Tom Riddle/Christian Coulson fans, admiration for the actor who played the teenaged Dark Lord has been a key part of the makeup of the Cafe.  In 2006, we finally got organised enough to actually send some symbol of our devotion to the man himself.  As yet, he hasn't dropped by for a personal hello, but we live in hope...

Potterverse: When our beloved Cafe was invaded by Dolores Scumbridge, who else could we turn to but the world-renowned experts in cow removal? Not just Fred and George, but Harry, Ron, Hermione, the entire Weasley Clan, and even more besides. The 'Potterverse' group is where all these guests dwell, since we didn't think Harry would appreciate being called a Basilisk, either Baby or Elder. They have been known to make the occasional - if usually brief - return to the forums, from time to time...

Professor Passion: Another of the pseudonyms of one Severus Snape, 'Professor Passion' is the writer behind Hogwarts' first Agony Uncle column. Responses tend to be somewhat on the sarcastic side. In the same way that breaking your leg tends to be somewhat painful. A full research project has been commissioned to find out just what blackmail was used to make him agree to this.

Ring of Death, The: Who needs Thunderdome, when you can have The Ring of Death? This is TBC’s premier stage for Wizard’s Duels, both for practice and for the more serious confrontation. Any GTDE with a grudge is cordially invited to open a can of whoop-ass on their opponent, but remember – one fight at a time, people.

Rose-O-Vision: TBC's official reality TV Show! Broadcasting 24 hours a day via a hidden network of palantirs, watch Rose and her husband Snape try to keep Tom out of Star's clutches. Rumours of a Rose: Uncut show are just that. Rumours.

Royal Family of Spammidom: Star should know better than to call Bragg and Sapphire the King and Queen of Spam... Once a King and Queen were established, it was inevitable that the Spam Princesses would not be far behind. Now, many of the more established members are Knights in the Royal Court of Spammidom, swearing to protect the boards from the twin terrors of boredom and stagnation.

Scumbridge: Come on. This is surely self-explanatory.

Secret Chamber, The: A protected forum, only available to those in the Elder Basilisk group. (ie. Those over 16.) The forum includes discussion of higher-rated fiction, and less family-friendly games, like Strip Twister.

Singles Awareness Day: TBC's alternative Valentine's Day celebration, held every year on the 14th of February for those who do not subscribe to the sickly sentiments of the Hallmark-sponsored alternative. The day has been enshrined in contests and TBC Shop merchandise, and looks set to continue to be an annual celebration for those who are not among the date-having.

Strip Twister: The oldest and longest thread in the Secret Chamber, and one that has followed TBC from board to board. A simple game of twister, where falling results in you losing an item of clothing. Oh, and did I mention that magic is allowed, along with most everything else you can imagine? Many different costumes have graced the twister board over the years, mostly worn by the woefully-outnumbered male contingent.

Svenethina: TBC's pet name for Tom Riddle's pet - the Basilisk appearing in Chamber of Secrets. Isn't she cute? (Psst... Look into those fangs and say you want to tell her 'no'.)

S.S. Rosewood: TBC's resident pirate ship, proudly sailing since summer of 2002. Captained by Captain Rose Hook, and crewed by the scurviest sea dogs on the ocean today. Reports of Will Turner being a captive cabin boy are, of course, unconfirmed.

TBC: Short for The Basilisk Cafe.  If you needed this clarified for you, award yourself 2 'Duuuuuuuh' points, and go sit in the corner.

TBC @ ff.net: Once fanfiction.net, one of the largest fanfiction sites on the web, opened the doors to its C2 communities, we were quick to sign up.  This community hosts some of ff.net's collection of Tom FanFic, as a supplement to our own archives.

TBC Clue: The age-old game of detection, where TBC members try to solve the gruesome murder of some unfortunate soul who should never have been connected with Harry Potter. Past victims have included the Professor Dolores Jane Umbridge, the Executive Board of WB, and Bellatrix Lestrange, the Slayer of Sirius. At the time of writing, TBC Clue was in the midway point of it's fourteenth incarnation.

TBC Clue Killers' Club: A small tradition of the Clue games mentioned above - obviously, when playing Clue, one of the participants must be guilty of the crime.  As well as a lenient sentence of a week's jail term in Hawaii, those who are identified as a 'Killer' in the game are given a button for their signature, and are added to the Killers' Club roster in the Clue Crypt.  There are also two double-members of the Killers' Club, who are given the title of 'Mass Murderer'.

TBC Crew: The collective name for the Admins and operators of the site. At present, there are six members of the Crew - Bragg, Mindy, Phishie, Rose, Sapphire & Star - who constitute some of the oldest members of the Cafe, as well as the original four Founders.

TBC Fanwork Archive: As of November 2005, the new home for all the fanart and fanfiction generated by TBC's members, featuring a wide variety of Tom Riddle-inspired fanwork, artwork of the GTDEs, and former contest entries. Any Slytherin-focussed fanwork is acceptable for these archives, as long as it is of a reasonable quality.

TBC LiveJournal: TBC's own LiveJournal, which is free to join and post in. The LJ community contains weekly updates about anything new on the sites or forums, and allows less active members keep in touch with the events of our favourite cafe. Members are free to use the community as they wish, however...

TBC Shop: World Domination is not achieved by spiffy shirts and merchandise. (Well, unless you happen to be the Disney Corporation...) But they can't hurt either, so here is a place where you can buy all manner of merchandise associated with TBC, from mugs and clocks to clothes.  Some contest winners also have pride of place in the Shop, having designed products for us.

Yak Fetish: When Isabella reported that Oliver Wood, icon to Olivergirls everywhere, was involved in a compromising situation involving a jar of Hellmann's mayonnaise, a toothpick and a certain long-haired mountain-dwelling quadruped, there was naturally some scepticism. Oh, who are we kidding? The rumour mill ran with it like a gazelle, and hasn’t stopped yet.
